Description

Late Autumn, Year 1992 of the New Generation
Lythraccean Mangroves, Scybilline Territory

The scorching heat of summer had given way to a mild autumn, which was beginning to fade into what looked to be an overcast and drizzly winter. But the egg remained unchanged. Brakk thought there was almost a divine serenity to it. To the constant, perfect glow. The way it seemed to emanate peace. He could just lay and stare at it for hours- it was his treasure.

And yet he worried. All eggs, he knew, must hatch. They hatch, or they die and rot. Something deep inside the drake knew that this egg was alive. It had a presence. A heartbeat that, though he could not hear it, he could feel in a way he couldn't explain. But the egg had shown no signs of hatching. No sign of change whatsoever, and he was concerned that something might be wrong with it. Was he supposed to do something? He was no safeguard- in fact he didn't know the first thing about caring for eggs. But he did his best to keep it warm; to keep it safe.

However the drake had this sneaking feeling that the egg needed something. It needed him to do something, to help it somehow, but he had no idea what it wanted. He had constructed a crude nest in the earth in a sheltered grove of brambles along the edge of the mangroves. He did his best to keep the egg warm with his body and away from the seeping cold of wetter areas. He kept it with him almost constantly, even when he would fish in the shallow waters, or, less often, hunt for the giant moths that his herd favored. Brakk was a largely sedentary creature- preferring to lay in wait as he attracted his prey to him, so it wasn't difficult to keep an eye on the glowing egg.

What was more disconcerting was that the egg itself sometimes attracted its own visitors. Thus far the drake had been able to keep any predators at bay without much difficulty, but he worried that if it didn't hatch soon something was going to give...

All of this he mulled over as he lay in the small bramble grove. A faint glow was beginning to show along the horizon and Brakk let out a wide yawn. He was already bedded down for the day, but he glanced back at the egg, ever-aglow, and frowned. In the gloomy dawn it was still quite apparent and he was a bit worried to sleep while it could still attract potential predators...

Struck by an idea, Brakk regarded the egg thoughtfully. It was soon after he'd found it that the drake had realized he possessed influence over light- a magic he had not previously thought himself capable of. Though he'd dabbled in the ability here and there since the event, he hadn't really dedicating much time or thought to it- preferring to focus on the treasure that now lay before him. But light casters, he knew, often just as much ability to affect the
absence of light as they did light itself.

Brakk drew in a breath and narrowed his eyes in concentration. He focused on the ethereal glow of the egg and willed it to shrink. As though he had placed a foot against it, the aura withdrew and the small glade darkened noticeably. Brakk brightened, proud of himself for the achievement. However no sooner had he done so than he felt an equal push right back. Like someone had taken their own food and pushed his away, the glow expanded again to where it previously held.

Bewildered Brakk eyed the egg, wondering if he had simply lost concentration and let his influence slip. Again he focused on the glow and pushed it down, and again it pushed itself right back at him. The drake snorted and pushed again. The egg pushed back.

This went on for some time, until Roth had reared his head above the horizon and finally in a huff Brakk gave up and turned away. He flopped his head on the ground, but soon turned and regarded the egg again.

It was alive. And it was ornery.

Oh look, someone didn't have to wait another year to get some more attention! Brakk inadvertently ends up practicing his newfound light magic with the stubborn egg that doesn't want to hatch.
