Description

Summer, Year 1992 of the New Generation
Lythraccean Mangroves, Scybilline Territory

The sky was falling. Brakk honestly hadn't even noticed until he heard the high pitched whistle of something plummeting to earth and crashing through the branches of the mangroves not far from where he lay fishing. His head shot up and he looked all around, startled, and was shocked to see lights streaming from the visible patches of night sky. He was sure that couldn't be a good omen, but he'd let the masters and their templar worry about it. Instead he glanced about, wondering where the stray piece of the heavens had fallen.

For a moment he debated whether or not to get up from his comfortable spot, but the fish weren't biting and the racket was sure to have scared them all away anyway. The young drake hauled himself to his feet and perked his ears in the direction he thought the crash had come from. The crickets were in full din- they'd hardly skipped a beat, but he could very faintly hear a hissing sound as though something very hot had struck moist earth. With a shrug he meandered in that direction, picking carefully through the familiar tangled roots. He wasn't terribly concerned- just curious really, but as he drew nearer to the spot an unfamiliar sense of urgency grew in the drake's chest. As he hopped over a low sweeping bough a burning smell hit Brakk's nose and he furrowed his brow and wrinkled his nostrils at the scent of it.

Whatever had come down had created a small crater in the soft mud and tore throught the canopy above, bathing it in the glow of the moon and the lights that still fell. He felt a flutter in his chest as Brakk's eyes landed on the culprit- a single, perfect glowing egg, of all things. There was a stillness that surrounded it. It seemed to emanate not just light, but a mysterious warmth. Brakk felt drawn to it.

As he moved to approach though, he noticed movement near the egg. At first it just looked as though the mud were shifting, but as he watched Brakk picked out the form of a serpent winding its way around the glowing prize. The snake's dull brown scales brilliantly reflected the egg's glow as it reared up, poised to devour its meal.

    "NO!"

At once Brakk's heart stopped and without thinking he sprang forward, frill springing out to full spread, scales flashing with a shocking bright yellow light. His jaws spread wide and the drake let loose a screeching hiss. He didn't know who's egg it was or if it was even a Scibilline at all. The only thing Brakk knew was that he had to save it. He had to protect it. With every fiber of his being.

Before he knew what was happening a bright, blinding light filled the clearing. The snake hissed in surprise and fear and shot away, into the waters and out of sight.

The light faded and Brakk folded his frill as he neared the egg, still glowing tranquilly as though nothing were wrong in the slightest. He glanced about, wondering if another falling light had caused the bright flash, but as he lifted his head Brakk felt faint. He tried to blink the feeling away, but shaking his head only made him stumble. Careful not to crush the egg, he fell first to his knees, and then his hind end followed. The last thing he remembered was drawing the egg close.

    He had to protect it.

OHO look what I finally finished, literally a year later. I feel like I do this a lot, but as often happens I think the wait really helped. I just needed this piece to..... gestate? In my mind. I think maybe the composition could be better, but I am immensely happy with that snake holy hell.

IN ANY CASE. Poor neglected Brakk finally gets his finished egg discovery piece for his dragon! And discovers his magic! Prior to this point Brakk had no magic, but the shock of the moment caused an outburst, which is why he passed out afterward.

Also this kind of shows what the bioluminescence on his frill looks like? I wanted it to be sort of like eyes, and then the spots along the spines continuously flow outward. Probably could have polished this a bit more, but I'm content to call it and move on :aww:
